The Port of Bilbao has today tested the measures it has in place to combat marine pollution. The drill, timed to coincide with World Environment Day and successfully conducted in the Outer Abra, was coordinated by the Port Authority, and also involved mooring companies, tugboats and the Ertzaintza (Basque police force).
The drill involved enacting the protocols set out in the Inland Maritime Plan for pollution. All the relevant teams and equipment were deployed, making Bilbao one of the European ports with the most resources for controlling emergencies. These include six containment booms, with a total length of 2,050 metres, which are further complemented by the booms of industrial companies with premises in the port such as Petronor, Tepsa and Esergui, and the resources of the mooring companies and Ibaizabal tugboats.
This type of drill is conducted on a regular basis, not only to test the effectiveness of the measures included in the Port of Bilbao Inland Maritime Plan for accidental marine pollution but also the coordination between the different players and their capacity to respond to the incident.
