The Bilbao Port Authority has today joined the ‘LGBTI+ points sarea’ initiative, a network of places providing safe, respectful and supportive environments for LGBTI+ people, with a special focus on protecting transgender people. As a member of the network, the Port Authority will display signs identifying its facilities as safe places to go in the event of an attack. It will also follow clear guidelines agreed with the Ertzaintza (Basque Police Force) on how to respond to any requests for help, will offer support to those affected and will contact family members, emergency services and/or institutional authorities if necessary.
In joining this initiative, the Port Authority also commits to taking symbolic and awareness-raising actions during Pride, such as flying the LGBTI+ flag, organising talks and/or publishing manifestos, with a view to raising awareness in society and making diversity visible.
