In addition to showcasing the attractions of Bizkaia and the Basque Country and the modern facilities of the Port of Bilbao in Getxo, the Port Authority has established numerous contacts with cruise lines and tour operators. It will hold business meetings at the stand set up for the occasion at the fair itself and in other spaces available at the event, as well as at parallel events included in the programme, with a view to promoting a form of tourism that brings significant benefits to sectors such as hospitality, retail and culture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sustainable cruise ships<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At these meetings, representatives from the Port Authority will discuss the work being done to electrify the cruise ship terminals through the roll-out of an Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system, ensuring the port is fully aligned with the environmental and operational standards already required by major international shipping companies. The OPS system will enable cruise ships to connect to the onshore power grid whilst in port, removing the need for auxiliary engines and significantly reducing emission, noise and vibration levels.<\/p>\n<p>The Port of Bilbao will also integrate PV solar power generation into the project, thereby ensuring that the energy supplied to vessels is predominantly green in origin.<\/p>\n<p>The cruise terminals in Getxo will be equipped with two OPS connection points, each capable of supplying up to 16 MVA per vessel, in compliance with international IEC\/ISO\/IEEE 80005 standards for power supply to cruise ships. The project is currently in the implementation phase, with the OPS system scheduled to come online at the cruise terminals by the end of 2027, enabling the first connections to be made in 2028.<\/p>\n<p>The project is co-funded by the Port Authority and the European Commission through the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) programme, the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan \u2013 NextGenerationEU, and the EIB (European Investment Bank).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forecasts and satisfaction survey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2026, the Port of Bilbao expects to handle over 100 port calls, with ships ranging from 104 to 344 metres in length and carrying between 113 and 6,334 passengers, showcasing the versatility of the port&#8217;s facilities. The terminal will host two cruise ships on the same day on a dozen occasions, triple berthing on five occasions and two turnaround cruises.<\/p>\n<p>The latest survey conducted by the Port Authority reveals that 90% of cruise passengers are satisfied or very satisfied with both the port facilities and the embarkation and disembarkation procedures.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"one_half column-last bbcol\"><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"thickbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Seatrade-Cruise-Global.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thickbox alignnone wp-image-54295 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Seatrade-Cruise-Global.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"792\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other aspects are also viewed positively, with the free Wi-Fi service being the most highly rated. Similarly, the shuttle service taking passengers to the metro stations, which connect them to the centre of Bilbao in twenty minutes, is also highly appreciated. Other services receiving particularly positive feedback include tourist information, incident management and medical services.<\/p>\n<p>These results are testament to the efforts made in recent years by the Port Authority, with the support of public bodies, tourist offices and tour operators, to make Bilbao, Bizkaia and the Basque Country an attractive destination for both shipping companies and tourists. Similarly, the figures confirm the wisdom of the investment made in Getxo by the Port Authority itself to build modern, safe and practical facilities to meet the specific needs of both cruise ships and their passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to this and to the work of many different professionals (pilots, tugboat operators, mooring crew, shipping agents, port and commercial operations staff, port police, security personnel and ship\u2019s chandlers, amongst others) who help to provide this service, the Port of Bilbao has become one of the main gateways for tourism in the Basque Country and an international benchmark for the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Another competitive advantage is that Bilbao Airport, which handles 62% of northern Spain\u2019s international traffic, is just fifteen minutes from the cruise terminal. By 2026, the airport will offer around 70 different destinations and, as well as connections to major European cities, a direct flight to New York, with three weekly departures during the summer months, operated by the US airline United Airlines.<\/p>\n<p>Shipping companies also praise Bilbao for being a flexible and efficient port, capable of receiving and handling cruise ships swiftly, and for having become a port of refuge to which cruise ships affected by bad weather are diverted.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/p>\n <div class=\"hide-for-small page-options-container
