The deadline for submission of bids in sealed envelopes is 28 April.<\/p>\n<p>The winning bid must ensure that any subsequent building, renovation, refurbishment and\/or fitting out of the building complies with all applicable levels of heritage conservation and architectural protection required by this unique building. In addition, any intervention and action inside the building must conserve those elements deemed to be of special historical or heritage value.<\/p>\n<p>The historic headquarters of the Port Authority are located on a plot of land with an approximate surface area of 2,000 m\u00b2 and a constructed surface area of some 4,200 m\u00b2. It is made up of two adjoining buildings connected to each other, namely the mansion at Campo Volant\u00edn no. 37 and the adjacent functional building at Huertas de la Villa no. 35. At present, this building complex is used by the Port Authority for residual purposes, given that its entire staff moved some years ago to the new offices in the Outer Abra, in the Santurtzi area, where most of the activity of the Port of Bilbao is concentrated.<\/p>\n<h6>126 years of history<\/h6>\n<p>In 1894, the architect Juli\u00e1n de Zubizarreta was commissioned to design the residence of the married couple Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda de Olabarri y Massino and Manuela Zubiria e Ybarra, in an emblematic position on the Paseo del<\/p>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"one_half column-last bbcol\"><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47156\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47156\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"thickbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Olabarri-noche2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-47156 size-full\" title=\"View of the Olabarri Palace at night\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Olabarri-noche2.jpg\" alt=\"View of the Olabarri Palace at night\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Olabarri-noche2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Olabarri-noche2-535x301.jpg 535w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Olabarri-noche2-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Olabarri-noche2-250x141.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47156\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View of the Olabarri Palace at night<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Campo Volant\u00edn. Work on this &#8220;hotel&#8221;, a term of French origin that was frequently used for houses built in the last third of the 19th century, was completed in April 1897, and the Olabarri family moved in. The building is today one of the few remaining residential constructions on the Paseo del Campo Volant\u00edn.<\/p>\n<p>After the Civil War, the building was home to the British Institute until 1952, when it was acquired by the Port Authority (at that time, the Board of Works of the Port) and enlarged by two of the most prestigious architects in Bilbao at that time, Manuel Gal\u00edndez and his nephew Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Chapa Gal\u00edndez.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/p>\n <div class=\"hide-for-small page-options-container hide-for-print\"> <hr class=\"page-options\"\/> <ul class=\"inline right page-options\"><li><a class=\"bmprint\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Print this article\"><i class=\"icon-print\"><\/i><\/a><\/li><li><a class=\"bmsend2friend\" href=\"mailto:?subject=Article of interest: The Port Authority puts the Olabarri Palace up for public auction -
