{"id":45744,"date":"2022-07-19T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-19T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/?p=45744"},"modified":"2022-07-21T08:34:56","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T06:34:56","slug":"the-most-significant-public-and-private-investment-in-the-port-of-bilbao-will-focus-on-creating-new-land-increasing-sustainability-and-improving-accessibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/en\/news\/the-most-significant-public-and-private-investment-in-the-port-of-bilbao-will-focus-on-creating-new-land-increasing-sustainability-and-improving-accessibility\/","title":{"rendered":"The most significant public and private investment in the Port of Bilbao will focus on creating new land, increasing sustainability and improving accessibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"show-for-small mobile-breadcrumbs\"><ul class=\"breadcrumbs\"><li class=\"home\"><span property=\"itemListElement\" typeof=\"ListItem\"><a property=\"item\" typeof=\"WebPage\" title=\"Go to Port of Bilbao.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/en\/\" class=\"home\" aria-current=\"page\"><span property=\"name\">Port of Bilbao<\/span><\/a><meta property=\"position\" content=\"1\"><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div><div class=\"one_half bbcol\">\n<p>The EUR <strong>35 million<\/strong> to be invested by the <strong>PORT AUTHORITY<\/strong> this year is mostly earmarked to create new land to meet existing demand, to start the electrification of the docks, to construct a new sewer system and to improve rail access.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Extension works of Dock AZ1<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Work continues on the extension of Dock AZ1, which will create 50,000 m\u00b2 of new surface area and provide a wharf of 251 linear metres. Investment in these works, 50% of which has already been completed, amounts to EUR 27.4 million, with a scheduled completion date for the spring of 2023.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Electrification of the docks <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Port Authority will deploy OPS (Onshore Power Supply) technology to equip its container, ro-ro and cruise terminals with facilities for power supply to vessels while they are berthed. In this case, the aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% and to cut vibration and noise levels. The works will be tendered out in several construction phases, with the first call scheduled for the end of 2022. The project also provides for facilities for renewable power generation, including solar photovoltaic, wave and wind power. Total investment will be around EUR 51.8 million.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New sewer system<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Basque Water Agency (URA), the Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium and the Port Authority of Bilbao will construct a new sewer system in the port of Bilbao, with a network of collectors to transport sewage and industrial water to the Galindo Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The planned solution is a vacuum sewer system that differs from common sewer systems that use gravity or pressure to remove wastewater, and is to be built on a size and scale which is unprecedented in the Basque Country. The works will be rolled out in three phases and will require a total investment of some EUR 20 million, mostly covered by URA and the Port Authority but also part-funded by the European Union through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (Next Generation EU). The project will be put out to tender in the coming months and will be awarded before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Railway siding in Ordu\u00f1a<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In July, the Spanish Administrator of Railway Infrastructures (Adif) has put out to tender the works contracts for a new 750 m. long siding at Ordu\u00f1a station, designed to speed up and improve the operation of freight trains between the port of Bilbao and inland Spain and, at the same time, to benefit passenger trains.<\/p>\n<p>The track, electrification, control and signalling works have been put out to tender in two contracts for a total amount exceeding EUR 10.87 million, with a project deadline of ten months. The works will be financed by the Port Authority of Bilbao (EUR 3.8 million, mostly for the corresponding civil works) through the Port Land Accessibility Fund, and the rest by ADIF (the part corresponding to safety and control works).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Improvements to the urban environment of <\/strong><strong>Santurtzi<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under an agreement with the Santurtzi Town Council, the Port Authority has earmarked EUR 1 million per year, for four years, to improve port-town interaction. The works are designed to enhance the urban environment of the town in various port areas and public access to the seafront. This year, work will be focused on a new, safer, wider and more aesthetically pleasing footbridge over the ADIF tracks, improving accessibility and equipped with lifts, and the development of the area around the<\/p>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"one_half column-last bbcol\"><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45720\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45720\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"thickbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/entrada-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-45720 size-full\" title=\"General view of the harbor\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/entrada-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"General view of the harbor\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/entrada-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/entrada-535x357.jpg 535w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/entrada-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/entrada-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/entrada-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/entrada-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/entrada-250x167.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">General view of the harbor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>fishing quay, occupying part of the recently demolished buildings on that block and providing it with facilities for sports and children&#8217;s activities.<\/p>\n<p>With respect to the <strong>PRIVATE SECTOR<\/strong>, over EUR <strong>250 million<\/strong> have already been invested or committed to undertake projects on decarbonisation, alternative energy forms and to attract new strategic business.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Decarbonisation hub<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In May,\u00a0<strong>Petronor\/Repsol<\/strong>\u00a0began work on its decarbonisation hub at the Punta Sollana quay. The facilities will include a plant for the production of synthetic fuels, construction work on which is scheduled to take two years and is expected to involve an investment of EUR 103 million. In addition, an urban waste recovery project will be launched with the aim of obtaining low-carbon energy from urban waste.<\/p>\n<p>This project paves the way to put the Basque Country on the map for generating green hydrogen, one of the sustainable fuels of reference in the immediate future. Any such project needs to be located in a logistics and industrial centre such as the port of Bilbao.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Extension of a plant for manufacturing wind power component parts<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Haizea Wind Group\u00a0<\/strong>has requested an extension of some 57,283 m\u00b2 to its facilities to be able to manufacture XXL monopiles, large steel structures used to moor wind turbines to the seabed. The project includes the construction of new industrial buildings, together with the fitting out of adjacent storage areas for the parts produced at the plant, which will subsequently be shipped by sea. The company estimates an investment of around EUR 150 million in warehouses, machinery, etc., with a multiannual timeframe (2022-2025).<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Haizea will become the benchmark factory in Europe for monopiles, and the Port of Bilbao will become the wind power hub of Southern Europe.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Extension of a breakbulk terminal<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Consignaciones Toro y Betolaza<\/strong> is investing over EUR 5 million in 70,150 m\u00b2 of surface area in the first phase of the central breakwater works to expand their breakbulk and Ro-Ro cargo terminal in Dock A6, with a new 21,600 m\u00b2 warehouse scheduled for completion between the end of 2022 and the first half of 2023.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Storage of bulk liquids for the food trade<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The construction of six new storage tanks for bulk liquid foodstuffs, each one with a capacity of 2,000 m\u00b3, is about to be completed at the <strong>Dep\u00f3sitos Portuarios<\/strong>, S.A. (Deposa) terminal. With this expansion, the storage capacity of the terminal, spread over 37 tanks, will be in excess of 31,000 m\u00b3.
