The programme, an initiative of the Port Authority, is designed for the local community and schoolchildren (from the 5th year of Primary School up to the 4th year of High School) to visit the port facilities and to learn first hand about the day-to-day activities of the port.<\/p>\n<p>This free programme was launched in 2014 to enable and encourage people living in the province of Bizkaia, and particularly younger people, to discover how the Port of Bilbao works, and to appreciate how it is directly related to the economic and social development of Bizkaia and the Basque Country. In the 2019 edition, the last one before it was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 8,400 people, including schoolchildren, university students, VT students and other adults, took advantage of the programme to visit the port.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of the approximately 3-hour guided tours, visitors will learn about the history and geography of the port, see the different ships and boats that dock at its quays, understand the importance of maritime transport and its operations and appreciate how the port affects the local area and how it works to be sustainable and to generate its own energy.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"one_half column-last bbcol\"><\/p>\n<p>The Port Authority offers schools wishing to participate in the 2022\/2023 edition of this programme a wide range of dates and times, and the tours are available in Basque and Spanish. The port will also provide a free pick-up service from the school itself, a guided bus tour, activities and work sheets and all kinds of amenities for the schoolchildren to enjoy their stay in the port.<\/p>\n<p>School visits are available from Monday to Friday.
