The event addressed the current potential for integrating the circular economy into the port system by deploying evidence-based best practice.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ibai Uria, the Occupational Risk Prevention and Environmental Manager of the Port Authority of Bilbao, explained the initiatives being taken in the port in this field, highlighting firstly the importance of selective waste collection and recovery and the treatment given to MARPOL waste depending on the type in question. He also explained how material dredged from the waterways is managed, and how it has been used in expansion works and projects, e.g. the use of surplus material from the Punta Lucero quarry for the stabilisation project, its use for the expansion works on the central pier, and the second life given to non-natural aggregates (steel aggregates, CDW, RAP) by reusing them in the manufacture of concrete and road surfaces, and their use in works and projects of the Port Authority, which have amounted to more than 1,150,000 tonnes since 2007.<\/p>\r\n<p>He also highlighted the fact that earth and stone matter from external works are accepted in the port, and are used as backfill material in expansion works, provided they meet the applicable geotechnical and environmental requirements.<\/p>\r\n<p>Mr. Uria concluded his talk by presenting an innovative project that is<\/p>\r\n<p><\/div><div class=\"one_half column-last bbcol\"><\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_43154\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43154\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"thickbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/9093-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43154 size-full\" title=\"Construction of the central pier\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/9093-2.jpg\" alt=\"Construction of the central pier\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43154\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Construction of the central pier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>currently being prepared: the setting up of a treatment plant in the Zierbena quarry, where stabilisation and solidification techniques will be applied to be able to recycle unfit soil for potential public use in the future.<\/p>\r\n<p>The seminar was also attended by Jorge Lara, from the innovation and development team of the Port Cluster of the Valenciaport Foundation; Sergio Sanz Bedate, researcher at CARTIF; and Federico Barreras, Assistant General Manager of Sea &amp; Ports.
