Outstanding was the traffic growth in vegetables, both fresh and frozen, onions, garlic and leeks, potatoes, lettuces and citrus fruits together with bananas.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, last year shipowner Boluda Lines set up a shipping line with Santa Cruz La Palma for Canary Island bananas, which arrive in reefer containers, a transport mode in which both Boluda and the Port of Bilbao are highly specialised.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Innovation and digitalisation<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The Port of Bilbao has the most important container terminal in the north of Spain and also the one with the greatest depths. The terminal, managed by Noatum Container Terminal Bilbao, has 540 plugs for reefer containers, as well as automatic access, which speeds up and simplifies all operations, including those for hauliers and fresh produce.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"one_half column-last bbcol\"><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34193\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34193\" style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"thickbox\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/28.01.2019_091-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34193 size-medium\" title=\"Container ship arriving at the port\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/28.01.2019_091-2-535x191.jpg\" alt=\"Container ship arriving at the port\" width=\"535\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/28.01.2019_091-2-535x191.jpg 535w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/28.01.2019_091-2-150x54.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bilbaoport.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/28.01.2019_091-2-1200x430.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Container ship arriving at the port<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition, the Port of Bilbao has Ro-Ro and multi-purpose terminals, a storage and distribution zone, perishables warehouses, belonging to Progeco and Frioport, besides good road and rail connections.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Mercabilbao<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>In 2018, the Mercabilbao facilities handled 225,259 tonnes of fruit and vegetables, which was a 2.7% increase over the previous year. This, plus its nearness to the Port of Bilbao, and its strategic position, very close to the Paris-Hendaye-Madrid junction beside the Cantabria Motorway with its direct link with the Spanish motorway network, consolidate the largest wholesale food market in the north of the Iberian Peninsula as an ideal point for carrying out an efficient and quality fruit and vegetable import-export strategy.<\/p>\n<p>This is a competitive advantage for operators in the fruit and vegetable sector, both from the point of view of economic and time resources and also of existing available infrastructures and logistics warehouses.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/p>\n <div class=\"hide-for-small page-options-container hide-for-print\"> <hr class=\"page-options\"\/> <ul class=\"inline right page-options\"><li><a class=\"bmprint\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Print this article\"><i class=\"icon-print\"><\/i><\/a><\/li><li><a class=\"bmsend2friend\" href=\"mailto:?subject=Article of interest: Port of Bilbao and Mercabilbao looking for new fruits and vegetables markets in Berlin -
